What to do When Your Allergy Rash Results in Hives
Allergy HivesHives is a rash caused by allergies that comes upon you suddenly. Your skin becomes red and blotchy which makes you look like you are blushing from being embarrassed or like you have just worked out.  Also, you will get little raised bumps that look like mosquito bite all over.  Allergy hives are almost never dangerous and vary in the length of time they will be present.  In some cases they disappear as quickly as they appear, other times they can be around for weeks or months.

If you are or have experienced allergy hives, the first thing you need to do is figure out what has caused them.  Then, be sure to avoid the cause of the reaction. If the hives do not go away within two to three days of appearing, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. If they are severe, your doctor might prescribe a kit for when you have an allergic hive break out.  The kit is called an Epi pen because it has the medicine epinephrine in it.  Most of the time allergy hives are not severe and the problem could go away in a few hours.  Below are some tips to deal with allergy hives if they are bothersome but not severe.

One thing you can to do give yourself fast relief is to take an antihistamine, such as Benadryl. If you don’t have this on hand, any medication that is used in the treatment of allergies will generally work for allergy hives as well.  You should ask your doctor first before trying any new medication while having a reaction, in case of adverse affects.  Something else you can do is to build your immune system by taking vitamin C supplements or eating food rich in vitamin C every day.

Another great idea to relieve the itch and aggravation that allergy hives can cause is to take an oatmeal bath.  To make proper oatmeal bath mix three tablespoons of cornstarch with five tablespoons of oatmeal. It may take more than one time to get the full affect of the oatmeal bath to relieve the itchiness of an allergy hive rash.

If you need to have more instant relief, you can try putting an ice back on the affected area or even a cold towel or rag will do the job. Aloe Vera gel also helps, since it has the same cooling effects. During the outbreak apply the gel twice daily.

Another thing to bear in mind about allergy hives is that they can be caused by stress and by food allergies as well, not just allergens in the air.  If you are stressed, take time to relax.  Try that nice and warm oatmeal bath that we just discussed.  That will help you relax your muscles and de-stress.  If you do not like baths, try yoga or meditation, or something you enjoy that calms you.

If your allergy hives appear while eating or shortly after eating, stop what you are doing immediately.  If you have never had a reaction before, take a moment to reflect on what you ate that might have caused the reaction.  Write down what you ate so you can let your doctor see what might have triggered your reaction as well. If the reaction is severe, seek medical help immediately. If the reaction is not severe, set up an appointment to discuss the outbreak with your doctor.
