Carpets and Allergies

Nowadays, carpets and allergies seem to be best friends as carpets are likely to soak up anything that comes into direct contact with their surface and not release it until they are thoroughly washed. The link between carpets and allergies is to be regarded as an indisputable matter and the best way to make your allergies stay away is by cleaning your carpets on a regular basis.

Carpets can harbor allergens such as pollen, dust mites and mold and you have to make sure that you vacuum your carpets as regular as possible in order to keep all these allergens to minimum levels. Dust mites are hiding in the fibers of your carpets and they are too tiny to see with naked eye. They survive in the carpet by eating skin shed from your own body and they can also live on various nourishments coming from all the dust they eat on a daily basis.

Pet dander is another allergen that can be “hosted” by your carpet. Similar to the dust mites, animal dander is too tiny to be seen. Pet dander becomes attached to every fiber in your carpet and each step you will take will make it become airborne thus triggering the nasty allergic reactions. Once pet dander is in the air, you will become ill as soon as you inhale it through your mouth and nose. Like dust mites and pet dander, pollen is almost impossible to get rid of from the inside space of your home.

Like pet dander and dust mites, pollen can also be the source of your regular allergic outbursts and you will have to work hard in order to make sure that pollen levels are kept at a minimum level in order to avoid any allergic reactions to it. In order to do this, you will have to use allergy carpet treatment and stick to a routine maintenance of your carpets. So, you will have to vacuum your carpets at least twice a week. Use a quality vacuum that comes with high-efficiency filtration bags. Micro-filtration bags are designed to trap the tiniest particles such as dust mites together with their feces thus preventing them from becoming airborne.

You should also have your carpets professionally cleaned at least twice a year – almost every major and reliable carpet manufacturer is likely to recommend the same maintenance routine. If you are wondering whether you can have carpets in your home or not, you should consider the following options: first, you can have carpets in your house as long as you manage to keep them from the breathing space and remove all the possible allergens/contaminants with a regular cleaning and vacuuming or, secondly, you can go for hard floors that are not likely to hold any contaminants.

However, you should be aware that such hard floors will allow the contaminants to hang out right in the air you are breathing thus triggering possible allergic reactions. So, this is a bottom line when it comes to having carpets in your house: carpets are designed to be terrific filters as long as you keep them clean on a regular basis. Once you fail to have your carpets cleaned, dust, dander and pollens are likely to build up and your carpets will become completely overrun with allergens thus aggravating your current allergies, asthma condition and even other breathing conditions you might be suffering from.
