Tattoo Allergies

Tattooing is among the most popular forms of body art but it can also lead to some health problems including allergies. In fact, allergies are among the most common side effects related to tattoos and people may end up having allergies even if the sterilization and sanitation approach has not been an issue. Actually, most of the allergies triggered by tattoos occur due to the unsuitable pigments that are used in inks.

For instance, green and red ink are among the best known culprits when it comes to triggering allergic reactions. Also, metallic pigments such as cobalt and cadmium are added to the inks and they can become responsible for allergic reactions as well. So, if you have a new tattoo and you already feel an itching sensation, this might become a symptom of skin allergy.

Allergies from tattoos come with symptoms that include redness around and in the tattoo area, irritation and swelling. Also, oozing can happen in the worst cases. All the listed symptoms arise mainly because of the inflammation that occurs in the tattooed area. It is wiser to go for a special test before getting a tattoo in order to find out whether you are allergic to the tattoo ink or not. All you will have to do is to get a tiny mark of ink right behind your ears in order to see whether allergic reactions occur or not.

Also, just because you do not experience allergic reactions one week after you have had your tattoo will not mean that you are totally clear. For instance, tattoo allergies may not show up right away. Once the allergy is severe, the ink should be removed by the health care provider who can do this by using a laser.

But if the allergy is not severe and you suffer only from occasional swelling or itching, anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory creams will do the trick and help you alleviate your allergic reaction. For instance, if you have already noticed that your tattoo gets a little red and even itchy during summertime, this symptom could be related to an allergy to the tattoo ink and you will have to address this matter by using the prescribed treatment provided by an allergist.
