Metal Allergies

Metal allergies refers to a particular type of hypersensitivity reaction against metal substances. For instance, a common type of metal allergy is the allergy against nickel. Nickel allergy may occur when someone is wearing cheap jewelry made of nickel. Almost 10% of the people are said to suffer from one type of metal allergy. Metal allergy is a cell-mediated type of reaction that can lead to inflammation, eczema and rashes with every single close contact with the metal allergen.

Allergy tests can determine the exact type of the metal that is causing the allergy. Common metal allergies can be detected such as allergies to chromate alloys, nickel, mercury, lead, silver or cobalt. Usually, metal allergies cause rashes, inflammations and itchiness that can affect every area of the body thus producing real discomfort to the individual. For instance, such allergic reactions can be triggered when foods rich in nickel are consumed. Even if the allergy is triggered by these particular foods, the real allergen here is the nickel.

For instance, there are certain amounts of nickel contained by legumes such as chocolate, canned foods and legumes and each of these can cause mild to very severe allergic reactions. In its milder form, a metal allergy can be manageable enough and it will not require too much attention. In this case, all you will have to do is to completely avoid eating such foods. Also, contact with metallic jewelry is to be avoided as well in order to avoid any further allergic reactions. But if your metal allergy is acute and causes you severe harm, you will have to seek medical attention as soon as possible in order to save your life and even prevent death.

When it comes to testing yourself for various metal allergies, your personal health care provider will place specific substances on each body area that is infested with inflammation, swelling or rash in order to see the specific reactions that take place. Based on his observations, your diagnosis will be made and you will get a suitable treatment for your metal allergy.

In most cases, creams and ointments are applied to all the infected areas with a clear objective of bringing about the necessary soothing or calming effects to those particular areas thus helping the healing process and have it hastened. Once a particular allergy to a common metal is discovered, you will have to avoid contact with this metal and stay away from foods that contain even the smallest traces of this metal in natural form.
