Tips on Preventing Eye Allergies

Human eye contracts allergic reactions easily enough and specific symptoms occur, symptoms that may be mistaken for other diseases. For instance, redness, itchiness and swelling in the eyes, burning sensations can all be part of a different medical condition. Even if eyes are protected by their lubrication, they still come into contact with a wide range of allergens that may cause allergic reactions. For instance, one of the usual culprits when it comes to developing an eye allergy is pollen and eye allergies caused by pollen are experienced especially during summer and spring months when the pollen levels are at their peak.

Also, your eyes may react to chemicals that may enter them or to allergens associated with your pets. Eye allergies may be triggered by both outdoor and indoor allergens. While outdoor allergens may be avoided by staying inside, indoor allergens have to be removed in order for you to stop experiencing allergic reactions in your eyes. For instance, some of the most common indoor allergens are smoke, pet dander and dust mites and each of them can trigger problems for your eyes.

In order to reduce your exposure to such indoor allergens, you will have to use special air purifiers and go for allergy free bedding. Also, it is paramount to keep your house clutter free. When outside, wearing quality pair of sunglasses is a wise choice. Once you see that your symptoms start, you will have to treat them very quickly. So, if your eyes are already swollen and red, you should place a clean and wet sterile cloth right over them in order to act as an effective cold compress. By doing this, you will reduce the irritation and swelling. Also, you can go for eye drops in order to alleviate the redness of the eyes.

Your doctor can tell you which allergen triggers your allergic reactions – once you know this, you will find it easier to avoid or remove that particular allergen from your environment. Also, there are several things you can do in order to alleviate your indoor eye allergy and make your space more comfortable to live in.

  • First, you will have to get your house dusted and vacuumed few times a week in order to reduce the levels of allergens and feel better.
  • Next, you will have to get pillowcases and sheets that are designed especially for people suffering from various allergies. The materials from which these are made are better for a person suffering from an allergy.
  • Using quality air purification systems is paramount because these systems can trap particles and dust in the air – this is to be regarded as a passive and effective way of reducing the allergens that would otherwise come in direct contact with your eyes.
  • You should try your best and not get into the habit of constantly touching your eyes with the hands – touching the eyes with your hands will introduce more and more allergens that will eventually irritate your eye. Instead of using your hands, you should go for some clean towels.
  • The filter of the air conditioner must be changed on a regular basis in order to avoid the accumulation of impurities. Also, you will have to pay attention to all the wet areas from your home because such areas may lead to some mold problems once unless you are careful enough.
  • Remember not to do all the necessary cleaning in one day only because this will give you more exposure to the allergens than you are allowed to have.
