Gluten Allergy vs. Gluten Intolerance

Gluten allergy symptoms occur once the allergen, namely the gluten comes into direct contact with a person’s small intestines thus triggering his/her immune system to cause damage to the lining of his/her colon. This strong attack on the lining and small intestines weakens the belly and the person suffering from gluten allergy will experience more severe health problems in the future. The delicate lining is the one responsible for soaking up all the necessary nutrients and vitamins in our bodies. Once this lining is weakened, people suffering from gluten allergy will lose their capability to transform valuable food into energy. A gluten allergy appears at a really young age – for instance, soon after the baby’s weaning period and when his mother start feeding him with cereals.

There are express reasons when it comes to developing a gluten allergy but, once the symptoms occur, you will have to do your best and avoid gluten and gluten-based products at any cost. The smaller the ingestion of gluten, the better your possibilities of not having to deal with future gluten allergy attacks. Such gluten allergies are more and more common but many people are not likely to know that they are suffering from this condition until their symptoms become severe enough. For instance, the latest research has already shown the fact that 1 in 168 children and 1 in 111 adult people are likely to have a gluten allergy. If left untreated, a gluten allergy may cause future bone diseases, anemia and even increase the person’s predisposition to developing cancer later in life.

The allergist is the one who can tell you whether you have a gluten allergy or not and he can do this by performing a blood test or a skin prick test in order to determine the exact types of gluten-based foods that can trigger the allergic reactions in you. If the reaction to the skin prick test is severe, you will have to eliminate rye, wheat, barley and oats from your daily diet together with all the gluten-based products. Gluten allergy is often mistaken for a gluten intolerance even if they are tow different conditions. For instance, gluten intolerance is a hereditary diseases that may affect your immune system and it is treated in a whole new different way when compared to a gluten allergy. Only the doctor may tell you whether you are suffering from a gluten allergy or gluten intolerance by performing a special blood test.

If you are suffering from a gluten allergy, you will be able to enjoy a normal lifestyle only by changing your current choice of foods. For instance, you may go for maize and rice because these two do not contain gluten and they may provide your with wonderful and tasty alternatives. Potato flours and tapioca are other tasty alternatives too and you may find plenty of cooks that can provide you with healthy to choose from. But keep in mind that the most important fact when dealing with a serious gluten allergy or intolerance is that you must eliminate oats, rye, wheat and barley from your daily diet for good.
