The Rare but Troublesome Mustard Allergy
Mustard AllergyWhile most of us associate food allergies with certain well known causes like shellfish or dairy, the number of food allergies that exist is quite large.  One problem allergen that could be tricky to deal with is a mustard allergy.  Of course, when most of us think of mustard, we imagine that big yellow jar in the refrigerator that comes out during a picnic to be used as a condiment on your hot dogs or hamburgers during a barbeque.  But mustard is far more prevalent in the foods we eat than you might imagine.

The condiment mustard it the most common way a person with a mustard allergy might come in contact with the allergen but it isn't the only way.  Mustard seed is the base spice that is what makes the mustard you put on your hot dog so good.  But mustard seed is also a spice used in cooking that could be part of many recipes that you know and love.  Meat loaf is one example of a recipe where mustard could be use or it might be included in many stews and soups.  So a mustard allergy can be tough because it is so difficult to avoid mustard in our society.

The symptoms of a mustard allergy resemble other food allergies as well.  It is common for someone with an allergy to mustard to experience breathing difficulties.  A rash that begins to swell is also a common symptom of a mustard allergy.  It is important to take the symptoms of mustard allergy symptoms because in some cases, these symptoms can become severe or even life threatening.

So if you have any suspicion that some of the mustard allergy symptoms are beginning to manifest themselves in you or a loved one, get medical care quickly.  This is not the kind of allergy to casually experiment with until you find some relief.  It is an allergy to treat as a threat to the life of the mustard allergy sufferer.

Another troublesome trait of a mustard allergy is that it often works in coordination with other food allergies and the combined symptoms can make life miserable for the allergy victim.  If you or a family member already have an allergy to peanuts, gluten or wheat, it is not uncommon for a mustard allergy to develop as well which can make the symptoms to those other allergies even more severe.

If the symptoms of your food allergy are not severe, often non-prescription drugs such as Benadryl can help reduce the swelling of a mustard allergy rash.  As is true of any allergy problem, the most important thing you can do is to get a reliable diagnosis of a mustard allergy so you can take care to avoid mustard in your diet.  This will call for checking ingredients labels of everything from condiments to lunchmeats and other foods to make sure that mustard is not used in the preparation of that food in any way.

When eating out or at a friend's house, you will have to check with the chef to assure yourself that what you are about to eat does not contain mustard.  A good rule of thumb in any social situation where you cannot find out if there is any mustard included in the preparation of the food is to not eat anything you cannot verify as safe for you.  This is a nuisance but it is far better to be cautious than to have to endure the uncomfortable and possibly dangerous symptoms of a mustard allergy.
